Stile and rail construction

Built from stiles, rails, and panels.

A molded door is a skin pressed into the shape of a panel. An MDF stile and rail door is assembled from real stiles, rails, and panels, so the profile has a real shadow line.

This is the Masonite MDF stile and rail line. It takes paint better than anything else on an interior door order, holds a crisp edge on the sticking, and is the right door when the casing and base are the selling point of the house. It is a paint grade door. If the specification says stained, that is the wood line.

Material Medium density fiberboard Consistent, grain free, and dimensionally stable across seasons. No raised grain telegraphing through the paint.
Finish Primed shaker MDF veneer, primed and ready for the painter. Not a stain grade door, and it does not pretend to be.
Designs Six shaker layouts One, two, three equal, three panel craftsman, five and six panel. All primed shaker, all available 20 minute fire rated.
Sizes 6/8, 7/0 and 8/0 Widths 1/6 through 3/0 in 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" thickness. Custom 9 and 10 foot heights are available in MDF or wood only.
Machining Prehung and bored here Hung, bored, and checked in Monroe, labeled to your takeoff so the crew hangs doors instead of sorting slabs.

What you can spec on it.

Each of these is an option in the portal, priced as you pick it, per opening or across the whole order.

Panel design One, two, three equal, three panel craftsman, five and six panel. One design usually runs the whole house with a few openings upgraded.
Thickness and fire rating 1-3/8" for a standard interior opening, 1-3/4" where the door needs the weight. Every design is available with a 20 minute fire rating.
Tall units Seven and eight foot for rooms carrying the ceiling height. Nine and ten foot are a shop build, and MDF is one of only two materials we can take that tall.
Bore and hardware Passage, privacy and dummy prep, bored to your height and backset. Residential backset is 2-3/8" or 2-3/4".
Casing and jamb package Casing profile and jamb depth on the same order as the doors, so the trim is quoted with the doors. Miters are V-nailed before the unit is assembled.

No. MDF has no grain to take stain. If the specification calls for stain, that is the wood interior line.

Yes, in the sense that matters here. There is no grain to raise and no seasonal movement at the joint, so the paint film stays flat and the joints do not telegraph a year later.

Yes, and that is part of the appeal. It closes with more weight behind it. Check the opening hardware if you are swapping a hollow core molded door for one of these.
